RESUMO

As the world's population and income levels continue to rise, there is a substantial increase in the demand for meat, which poses significant environmental challenges due to large-scale livestock production. This review explores the potential of microalgae as a sustainable protein source for meat analogues. The nutritional composition, functional properties, and environmental advantages of microalgae are analyzed. Additionally, current obstacles to large-scale microalgal food production are addressed, such as strain development, contamination risks, water usage, and downstream processing. The challenges associated with creating meat-like textures and flavors using techniques like extrusion and emulsion formation with microalgae are also examined. Lastly, considerations related to consumer acceptance, marketing, and regulation are summarized. By focusing on improvements in cultivation, structure, sensory attributes, and affordability, microalgae demonstrate promise as a transformative and eco-friendly protein source to enhance the next generation of meat alternatives.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate the causal relationships between herpes viruses and sepsis. METHODS: Publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) data were used. Four viruses, HSV-1, HSV-2, EBV and CMV, were selected, with serum positivity and levels of antibody in serum as the herpes virus data. RESULTS: In forward MR, susceptibility to HSV-1 was a risk factor for sepsis. The susceptibility to CMV showed a severity-dependent effect on sepsis and was a risk factor for the 28-day mortality from sepsis, and was also a risk factor for 28-day sepsis mortality in critical care admission. EBV EA-D antibody level after EBV infection was a protective factor for 28-day sepsis mortality in critical care admission, and CMV pp28 antibody level was a risk factor for 28-day sepsis mortality in critical care admission. No statistically significant causal relationships between HSV-2 and sepsis were found. No exposures having statistically significant association with sepsis critical care admission as an outcome were found. In reverse MR, the sepsis critical care admission group manifested a decrease in CMV pp52 antibody levels. No causal relationships with statistical significance between sepsis exposure and other herpes virus outcomes were found. CONCLUSIONS: Our study identifies HSV-1 susceptibility as a sepsis risk, with CMV susceptibility elevating severity. Varied effects of EBV and CMV antibodies on sepsis severity are noted. Severe sepsis results in a decline in CMV antibody levels. Our results help prognostic and predictive enrichment and offer valuable information for precision sepsis treatment.

RESUMO

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) is the only non-invasive technique to quantify neurometabolic compounds in the living brain. We used 1H-MRS to evaluate the brain metabolites in a rat model of Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) established by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). 36 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham and CLP groups. Each group was further divided into three subgroups: subgroup O, subgroup M, and subgroup N. Neurological function assessments were performed on the animals in the subgroup O and subgroup N at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h. The animals in the subgroup M were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 12 h after CLP. Compared with the sham group, the ratio of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) to creatine (Cr) in the hippocampus was significantly lower in the CLP group. The respective ratios of lactate (Lac), myo-inositol (mIns), glutamate and glutamine (Glx), lipid (Lip), and choline (Cho) to Cr in the CLP group were clearly higher than those in the sham group. Cytochrome c, intimately related to oxidative stress, was elevated in the CLP group. Neurofilament light (NfL) chain and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) scores in the CLP group were significantly higher than those in the sham group, while zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) was downregulated. Compared with the sham group, the CLP group displayed higher values of oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), central venous-arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (P (cv-a) CO2), and central venous lactate (VLac). In contrast, jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjvO2) declined. In the present study, 1H-MRS could be used to quantitatively assess brain injury in terms of microcirculation disorder, oxidative stress, blood-brain barrier disruption, and glial cell activation through changes in metabolites within brain tissue.

RESUMO

Exogenous abiotic stimulant treatments are a straightforward and effective method for enhancing secondary metabolites in plants. In this study, the response surface optimization method was used to optimize the conditions for enriching flavonoids in short-germinated black soybeans under a slight acid treatment, and the mechanism of flavonoid accumulation during black soybean germination was explored. The results show that the use of a 126.2 mM citric acid-sodium citrate buffer (pH 5.10) as a slight acid treatment resulted in the highest flavonoid content when the black soybeans were germinated for 24 h. Under these conditions, the isoflavonoid (glycitin, daidzein, and genistein) increased significantly, and the flavonoid content reached 2.32 mg/g FW. The microacidified germination treatment significantly increased the activities and relative gene expression levels of key enzymes involved in flavonoid metabolism (4-coumarate-CoA ligase and cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase, etc.). However, the slight acid treatment inhibited the growth of the black soybeans and caused damage to their cells. This was evidenced by significantly higher levels of malondialdehyde, superoxide anion, and hydrogen peroxide compared to the control group. Furthermore, the antioxidant system in the short-germinated soybeans was activated by the slight acid treatment, leading to a significant increase in the activities and relative gene expression levels of catalase and peroxidase. The results above show that a slight acid treatment was beneficial in inducing the accumulation of flavonoids during the growth of black soybean sprouts. This lays a technical foundation for producing black soybean products that are rich in flavonoids.

RESUMO

AIMS: To examine differences between the eyes in choriocapillaris perfusion and choroidal thickness in children with myopic anisometropia. METHODS: In this observational and prospective study, 46 children with myopic anisometropia were enrolled. Choriocapillaris perfusion parameters, including the percentage of flow voids, the total number of flow voids and the average flow void area were obtained by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The OCTA image was divided into a 1 mm-diameter central circle (C1) and a 2.5 mm-diameter annulus (without the inner central 1 mm circle, C1-2.5). Both C1 and C1-2.5 are centred on the foveola. The C1-2.5 was divided into nasal (N1-2.5), temporal (T1-2.5), inferior (I1-2.5) and superior (S1-2.5) areas. Differences in these parameters in different regions between eyes were analysed. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the percentage of flow voids and the average flow void area between the fellow eyes. The total number of signal voids was significantly higher in the less myopic eyes in C1-2.5 (p=0.032), S1-2.5 (p=0.008) and N1-2.5 (p=0.019). Changes in spherical equivalent refraction and axial length were both correlated with the changes in the total number of flow voids in N1-2.5 (R=-0.431, p=0.03; R=-0.297, p=0.047). CONCLUSIONS: The choroid in the macular region becomes thinner and the total number of flow voids in the nasal macular region decreased with the amplitude of myopia. This suggests that a decrease in total number of flow voids may indicate an early change in myopia.

RESUMO

The massive production of food waste and plastic pollution necessitates innovative solutions. This study reports the first fabrication of a flexible chitosan (CH) film reinforced with lignosulfonate (LS) derived from pulping byproduct as a sustainable alternative to synthetic food packaging. The CH/LS composite film was prepared by a simple casting method with varying LS contents of 1 % and 2 %. Compared to CH film, the addition of 2 % LS increased the tensile strength by over 4 times and decreased water vapor permeability by 11 %. Moreover, the CH/LS film exhibited excellent UV-shielding properties. This novel use of LS to reinforce CH film presents an eco-friendly active packaging material. When used to package cherry tomatoes for 2 weeks, the CH/LS film effectively maintained fruit freshness and hardness while minimizing weight loss. This work provides new scientific evidence on the optimized preparation and application of CH/LS composite films from renewable resources for food preservation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Phenolic acid exhibits a variety of well-known physiological functions. In this study, optimal germination conditions to ensure total phenolic acid enrichment in barley sprouts induced by salicylic acid treatment and its effects on sprout physiology and activity, as well as the gene expression of key enzymes for phenolic acid biosynthesis, were investigated. RESULTS: When sprouts were treated with 1 mmol L-1 salicylic acid during germination and germinated at 25 °C for 4 days, the phenolic acid content was 1.82 times that of the control, reaching 1221.54 µg g-1 fresh weight. Salicylic acid significantly increased the activity of phenylalanine aminolase and cinnamic acid-4-hydroxylase and the gene expression of phenylalanine aminolase, cinnamic acid-3-hydroxylase, cinnamic acid-4-hydroxylase, 4-coumaric acid-coenzyme A, caffeic acid O-methyltransferase, and ferulate-5-hydroxylase in barley sprouts. However, salicylic acid treatment significantly increased malondialdehyde and H2 O2 content, H2 O2 and O2 - fluorescence intensity, as well as significantly decreasing sprout length and fresh weight. Salicylic acid treatment markedly increased the activity of peroxidase and catalase and the gene expression of peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase in barley sprouts. CONCLUSION: Salicylic acid treatment during barley germination significantly promoted the enrichment of total phenolic acid by increasing the activities and gene expression levels of enzymes involved in the phenolic acid biosynthesis pathway. Salicylic acid induced the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, inhibited sprout growth, and activated the antioxidant system. This study provides a basis for the future development of functional foods using phenol acid-rich plants as raw materials. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Aim: Spectral Flux (SF), which is based on common algorithms in the audio processing field, was applied to quantitatively analyze ECG signals to optimize the timing of defibrillation. With the aim of proving the performance in optimizing the timing of defibrillation, SF was compared with Amplitude Spectrum Area (AMSA) in a porcine model of ventricular fibrillation (VF) in a retrospective analysis experiment. Methods: A total of 56 male domestic pigs, weighing 40 ± 5 kg, were induced to undergo VF. Animals were then left untreated for 10 min, and after 6 min of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) defibrillation was performed. The respective SF and AMSA values were calculated every minute during VF and CPR. Comparisons were made through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, one-way analyses of variance (one-way ANOVA), and scatterplots for the successful initial defibrillation sample (positive samples, Group R) and the failed initial defibrillation sample (negative samples, Group N) to illustrate the performance in optimizing the timing of defibrillation for the AMSA and SF methods. Result: Values of SF and AMSA gradually decreased during the 10 min VF period and increased in during the 6 min CPR period. The scatterplots showed that both metrics had the ability to distinguish positive and negative samples (p < .001). Meanwhile, ROC curves showed that SF (area under the curve, AUC = 0.798, p < .001) had the same ability as AMSA (AUC = 0.737, p < .001) to predict the successful defibrillation (Z = 1.35, p = 0.177). Moreover, when comparing the values for AMSA and SF between the successful initial defibrillation samples (Group R) and the failed initial defibrillation samples (Group N), the results showed that the values of both AMSA and SF in Group R were significantly higher than those in Group N (p < .001). Conclusion: In the present study, SF method had the same ability as AMSA to predict successful defibrillation with significantly higher values in cases of successful defibrillation than the instances in which defibrillation failed. Additionally, SF method might be more stable than AMSA for filtering out the higher frequency interference signals due to the narrower frequency range and had higher specificity and predictive accuracy than AMSA. So SF method had high clinical potential to optimize the timing of defibrillation. Nevertheless, further animal and clinical studies are still needed to confirm the effectiveness and practicality of SF as a predictive module for defibrillators in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Thyroid ultrasound is a widely used diagnostic technique for thyroid nodules in clinical practice. However, due to the characteristics of ultrasonic imaging, such as low image contrast, high noise levels, and heterogeneous features, detecting and identifying nodules remains challenging. In addition, high-quality labeled medical imaging datasets are rare, and thyroid ultrasound images are no exception, posing a significant challenge for machine learning applications in medical image analysis. In this study, we propose a Dual-branch Attention Learning (DBAL) convolutional neural network framework to enhance thyroid nodule detection by capturing contextual information. Leveraging jigsaw puzzles as a pretext task during network training, we improve the network's generalization ability with limited data. Our framework effectively captures intrinsic features in a global-to-local manner. Experimental results involve self-supervised pre-training on unlabeled ultrasound images and fine-tuning using 1216 clinical ultrasound images from a collaborating hospital. DBAL achieves accurate discrimination of thyroid nodules, with a 88.5% correct diagnosis rate for malignant and benign nodules and a 93.7% area under the ROC curve. This novel approach demonstrates promising potential in clinical applications for its accuracy and efficiency.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study used three-dimensional (3D) modelling to investigate scleral profiles in myopic eyes and compare them with emmetropic eyes. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, the eyes of 151 participants were analysed using the corneoscleral profile module (CSP) of the Pentacam HR. Non-rotationally symmetrical ellipsoids were fitted to the anterior scleral sagittal height. Three radii were analysed, namely the nasal-temporal (Rx), superior-inferior (Ry) and anterior-posterior (Rz) orientations. Additionally, the area index (AI) and aspherical parameters (Qxy, Qxz and Qyz) of the anterior sclera-fitted ellipsoid (ASFE) were quantified. RESULTS: The findings showed an increase in Rx (-0.349 mm/D), Ry (-0.373 mm/D), Rz (-1.232 mm/D) and AI (-36.165 mm2 /D) with increasing myopia. From emmetropia to high myopia, the vertical and horizontal planes of the anterior sclera became increasingly prolate (emmetropia, Qxz: 0.02, Qyz: 0.01; low myopia, Qxz: -0.28, Qyz: -0.28; high myopia, Qxz: -0.41, Qyz: -0.43). There were no significant differences in the coronal plane across the three groups (H = 2.65, p = 0.27). The anterior scleral shape of high myopes in the horizontal and vertical planes was more prolate than that of emmetropes and low myopes (Qxz, high myopes vs. low myopes: p = 0.03, high myopes vs. emmetropes: p < 0.001; Qyz, high myopes vs. low myopes: p = 0.04, high myopes vs. emmetropes: p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: As the degree of myopia increased, non-uniform anterior scleral enlargement was observed. These findings provide a better understanding of the anterior segment with varying degrees of myopia.

RESUMO

Purpose: To determine three-year change of the corneal biomechanical parameter stress-strain index (SSI) in schoolchildren aged 7- 9 years and their correlation with refractive error and axial length (AL). Methods: This is a prospective cohort study. Data of the AL, refractive error, and corneal biomechanical parameter SSI were collected at baseline and a 3-year follow-up for 217 schoolchildren. SSI, AL, and refractive error were measured via corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology (Corvis ST), IOLMaster biometry, and cycloplegic refraction. Three years of changes in SSI and its association with refractive error and AL were analyzed. Participants were divided into persistent nonmyopia (PNM), newly developed myopia (NDM), and persistent myopia (PM). The three-year difference in SSI among the three groups was analyzed. Results: After three years of follow-up, the corneal biomechanical parameter SSI decreased in all participants (P < 0.01). There was a negative correlation between the change in SSI and the change in AL (r = -0.205, P=0.002) and a positive correlation between the change in refractive error (r = 0.183, P=0.007). After three years of follow-up, there was a decrease in the SSI for the NDM, PM, and PNM participants, with a median change of -0.05 for PNM and -0.13 and -0.09 for the NDM and PM, respectively. There was a significant decrease in corneal biomechanical properties for NDM patients compared with PNM patients (P < 0.01). Conclusion: In 7- to 9-year-old schoolchildren, SSI decreased after three years of the longitudinal study, and the change in SSI was correlated with the change in AL and refractive error. There was a rapid decrease in corneal biomechanical properties among newly developed myopic patients.

RESUMO

Promoting resveratrol accumulation in plants and utilizing resveratrol-rich plants as raw materials for the development of functional foods is a promising development direction. The effects of methyl jasmonate (MeJA), in combination with CaCl2 and Ca2+ inhibitors, on physiological metabolism and resveratrol enrichment of peanut sprouts were investigated. MeJA combined with CaCl2 increased Ca2+ content, calmodulin content, and Ca2+- adenosine triphosphatase activity, as well as upregulated calcium-binding proteinase expression levels. Treatment with MeJA plus CaCl2 significantly increased peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities and antioxidant capacities, significantly decreased the content of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide, which resulted in a significantly increased in sprout length and fresh weight, and alleviated the inhibition of sprout growth. MeJA plus CaCl2 significantly increased the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and 4-coumarate coenzyme A ligase and upregulated the expression levels of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase, and resveratrol synthase, thus significantly increasing resveratrol content. However, MeJA combined with Ca2+ antagonists reversed these effects. These results indicate that MeJA interacts with Ca2+ to promote resveratrol synthesis in peanut sprouts and to improve sprout stress tolerances.

RESUMO

The present study investigated the effects regulating melatonin (MT) biosynthesis under methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment in mustard sprouts. The results revealed that MeJA significantly increased the MT content in the sprouts to 11.43 times that of the control. However, MeJA treatment had an inhibitory effect on growth. Tryptophan decarboxylase and tryptamine 5-hydroxylase gene expression were significantly induced by MeJA. Moreover, 156 differential abundance proteins (DAPs) were detected in 4-day-old sprouts using quantitative proteomic methods. These DAPs were divided into 13 functional groups, and the vast majority of DAPs involved in defense/stress, energy, signal transduction, and secondary metabolism increased. MeJA treatment significantly enriched 15 pathways, including glutathione metabolism, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and tryptophan metabolism. In particular, the abundance of three DAPs (myrosinase 1, cytosolic sulfotransferase 16, and glutamate-glyoxylate aminotransferase 2) in the tryptophan metabolism pathway, a substrate for MT biosynthesis, increased significantly. In summary, MeJA induces endogenous MT biosynthesis in mustard sprouts by promoting the genes expression of MT synthetase and increasing the abundance of tryptophan-related proteins.

RESUMO

Microalgae have been recognized as emerging cell factories due to the high value-added bio-products. However, the balance between algal growth and the accumulation of metabolites is always the main contradiction in algal biomass production. Hence, the security and effectiveness of regulating microalgal growth and metabolism simultaneously have drawn substantial attention. Since the correspondence between microalgal growth and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level has been confirmed, improving its growth under oxidative stress and promoting biomass accumulation under non-oxidative stress by exogenous mitigators is feasible. This paper first introduced ROS generation in microalgae and described the effects of different abiotic stresses on the physiological and biochemical status of microalgae from these aspects associated with growth, cell morphology and structure, and antioxidant system. Secondly, the role of exogenous mitigators with different mechanisms in alleviating abiotic stress was concluded. Finally, the possibility of exogenous antioxidants regulating microalgal growth and improving the accumulation of specific products under non-stress conditions was discussed.

RESUMO

We reveal the intrinsic pseudocapacitive center of graphene-oxide-based aerogels by investigating different modified graphene skeletons from various approaches. A high proportion of carbonyl groups in carbon networks is shown to optimize the construction of rational pseudocapacitive sites by triggering reversible proton-induced surface reactions, leading to satisfactory electrochemical performance.

RESUMO

The impact of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification on pri-miRNA in sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SICM), and its underlying regulatory mechanism, have not been fully elucidated. We successfully constructed a SICM mice model through cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). In vitro, a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced HL-1 cells model was also established. The results showed that sepsis frequently resulted in excessive inflammatory response concomitant with impaired myocardial function in mice exposed to CLP, as indicated by decreases in ejection fraction (EF), fraction shortening (FS), and left ventricular end diastolic diameters (LVDd). miR-193a was enriched in CLP mice heart and in LPS-treated HL-1 cells, while overexpression of miR-193a significantly increased the expression levels of cytokines. Sepsis-induced enrichment of miR-193a significantly inhibited cardiomyocytes proliferation and enhanced apoptosis, while this was reversed by miR-193a knockdown. Furthermore, under our experimental conditions, enrichment of miR-193a in SICM could be considered excessively maturated on pri-miR-193a by enhanced m6A modification. This modification was catalyzed by sepsis-induced overexpression of methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3). Moreover, mature miRNA-193a bound to a predictive sequence within 3'UTRs of a downstream target, BCL2L2, which was further validated by the observation that the BCL2L2-3'UTR mutant failed to decrease luciferase activity when co-transfected with miRNA-193a. The interaction between miRNA-193a and BCL2L2 resulted in BCL2L2 downregulation, subsequently activating the caspase-3 apoptotic pathway. In conclusion, sepsis-induced miR-193a enrichment via m6A modification plays an essential regulatory role in cardiomyocyte apoptosis and inflammatory response in SICM. The detrimental axis of METTL3/m6A/miR-193a/BCL2L2 is implicated in the development of SICM.

RESUMO

Soybeans have medicinal value and are an oil crop with medicinal and food properties. The present work investigated two aspects of isoflavone accumulation in soybean. First, germination conditions for exogenous-ethephon-mediated accumulation of isoflavone were optimised through response surface methodology. Second, various influences of ethephon on the growth of germinating soybeans and isoflavone metabolism were investigated. The findings of the research led to the conclusion that exogenous ethephon treatment effectively facilitated the enrichment of isoflavones in soybeans during germination. Optimal germination conditions were obtained through a response surface optimization test, which yielded the following criteria: a germination time of 4.2 d, an ethephon concentration of 102.6 µM, and a germination temperature of 30.2 °C. The maximum isoflavone content was 544.53 µg/sprout FW. Relative to the control, the addition of ethephon significantly inhibited sprout growth. Exogenous ethephon treatment led to the phenomenon that peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities and their gene expression increased significantly in germinating soybeans. Meanwhile, the expression of genes related to ethylene synthetase increase under the effect of ethephon promoting ethylene synthesis. Ethylene multiplied the total flavonoid content of soybean sprouts relying on the increase in activity and gene expression of crucial isoflavone biosynthesis-related enzymes (phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and 4-coumarate coenzyme A ligase) during germination.

RESUMO

Broccoli sprouts have a strong ability to accumulate isothiocyanate and selenium. In this study, the isothiocyanate content increased significantly as a result of ZnSO4 stress. Particularly, based on the isothiocyanate content is not affected, the combined ZnSO4 and Na2SeO3 treatment alleviated the inhibition of ZnSO4 and induced selenium content. Gene transcription and protein expression analyses revealed the changes in isothiocyanate and selenium metabolite levels in broccoli sprouts. ZnSO4 combined with Na2SeO3 was proven to activate a series of isothiocyanate metabolite genes (UGT74B1, OX1, and ST5b) and selenium metabolite genes (BoSultr1;1, BoCOQ5-2, and BoHMT1). The relative abundance of the total 317 and 203 proteins, respectively, in 4-day-old broccoli sprouts varied, and the metabolic and biosynthetic pathways for secondary metabolites were significantly enriched in ZnSO4/control and ZnSO4 combined Na2SeO3/ZnSO4 comparisons. The findings demonstrated how ZnSO4 combined with Na2SeO3 treatment reduced stress inhibition and the accumulation of encouraged selenium and isothiocyanates during the growth of broccoli sprouts.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Objective: Our study aims to evaluate the association between heart rate variability (HRV) and short- and long-term prognosis in patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). Methods and Results: Adult patients continuously monitored for over 24 h in ICUs from the the American Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-IV Waveform Database were recruited in our study. Twenty HRV-related variables (8 time domain, 6 frequency domain, and 6 nonlinear variables) were calculated based on RR intervals. The association between HRV and all-cause mortality was assessed. Ninety-three patients met the inclusion criteria and were classified into atrial fibrillation (AF) and sinus rhythm (SR) groups, which were further divided into 30-day survivor group and nonsurvivor\groups based on their survival status. The 30-day all-cause mortality rates in AF and SR groups were 36.3% and 14.6%, respectively. All the time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear HRV parameters did not differ significantly between survivors and nonsurvivors with or without AF (all P > 0.05). Presence of renal failure, malignancy, and elevated blood urea nitrogen level were associated with increased 30-day all-cause mortality in SR patients, while presence of sepsis, infection, higher platelet count, and magnesium level were associated with increased 30-day all-cause mortality in AF patients. Conclusions: Heart rate variability variables were not associated with increased 30-day all-cause mortality in ICU patients with or without AF.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Introduction: Although the effects on hemodynamics of gasping during cardiac arrest (CA) have received a lot of attention, less is known about the respiratory mechanics and physiology of respiration in gasping. This study aimed to investigate the respiratory mechanics and neural respiratory drive of gasping during CA in a porcine model. Method: Pigs weighing 34.9 ± 5.7 kg were anesthetized intravenously. Ventricular fibrillation (VF) was electrically induced and untreated for 10 min. Mechanical ventilation (MV) was ceased immediately after the onset of VF. Hemodynamic and respiratory parameters, pressure signals, diaphragmatic electromyogram data, and blood gas analysis data were recorded. Results: Gasping was observed in all the animals at a significantly lower rate (2-5 gaps/min), with higher tidal volume ( VT ; 0.62 ± 0.19 L, P < 0.01), and with lower expired minute volume (2.51 ± 1.49 L/min, P < 0.001) in comparison with the baseline. The total respiratory cycle time and the expiratory time tended to be lengthened. Statistically significant elevations in transdiaphragmatic pressure, the pressure-time product of diaphragmatic pressure, and the mean of root mean square diaphragmatic electromyogram values (RMSmean) were observed ( P < 0.05, P < 0.05, and P < 0.001, respectively); however, VT /RMSmean and transdiaphragmatic pressure/RMSmean were reduced at all time points. The partial pressure of oxygen showed a continuous decline after VF to reach statistical significance in the 10th minute (9.46 ± 0.96 kPa, P < 0.001), whereas the partial pressure of carbon dioxide tended to first rise and then fall. Conclusions: Gasping during CA was characterized by high VT , extremely low frequency, and prolonged expiratory time, which may improve hypercapnia. During gasping, increased work of breathing and insufficient neuromechanical efficacy of neural respiratory drive suggested the necessity of MV and appropriate management strategies for MV during resuscitation after CA.
